Pin Drafting
The pin-drafter is used to further align the fibers in the sliver after the card. This has several effects on the sliver. First it aligns the fibers to a more parallel state than the card can produce allowing the production of a semi-worsted yarn from the spinner.
Second, the pin-drafter takes several slivers in at once and blends them together and drafts the fiber to produce one sliver out that is more even than the slivers usually produced by the card. The key to even size and weight slivers out of the card is to have an even and equal amount of fiber feeding into the card. We accomplish this by having an even feed system on the front of our card.
Fibers may be pin drafted to align them further into a parallel sliver. This makes it easier to draft the roving and as mentioned above produces a “semi-worsted” type yarn. Fibers must be pin-drafted several times to prepare them for machine spinning of semi-worsted yarn. Woolen yarn may be produced from the slivers directly from the card but care needs to be taken to ensure that the fiber is fed evenly into the card.
Our pin-drafter is a Warner Swazey 3680 two head four can pin-drafter.
